Creating an event

Categories, dates and capacity, the three entry types, and info-only events.

Updated 20 Oct 2026

An event is the race day; its categories are what people actually enter. Get the categories right and the checkout, the event page, the start list and the results all follow from them.

Categories

Each category carries its own:

  • Distance and name (10K, Half marathon, Kids' mile).
  • Date and start time. Categories can fall on different days, so a two-day festival is one event.
  • Price, or free. Early-bird pricing is covered in Pricing tiers.
  • Capacity. The checkout shows places left and closes the category when it is full.
  • Minimum age, checked against the entrant's date of birth at checkout.
  • Visibility, so a category can exist for your own use without appearing on the public page.

Entry types

A category takes one of three entry types.

TypeWho entersWhat counts
IndividualOne person per entryPeople
RelayA team, with one person per legTeams
GroupFriends entering together under one team nameTeams

For relay and group categories the price, the capacity and the registered count are per team, not per person. A team is a team name, a contact email and a roster of exactly the team size. The roster can be completed after payment; until then the entry shows "2 of 4" and the contact can add the missing members in the participant portal. Each relay member is assigned a leg, and no leg can have two people.

Waiver, terms and details

Switch on a waiver or your own terms and entrants must accept them before paying. You choose which details to collect: emergency contact, address, club, date of birth and so on. With Speedy checkout the entrant pays first and fills these in later, and RaceLinq sends a nudge email before your cut-off.

Events without registration

Registration is optional per event. Turn it off and the event becomes information only: the event page and your embedded countdown, details and schedule still work, but there is no checkout and no pricing, waiver or age settings to maintain. Turning registration off later keeps every entry you have already taken and flips embedded entry forms to "registration closed".

Series

Related races, such as a summer league or a trail series, can be grouped into a series. A series carries its own branding that its events inherit, and a basket can hold entries to more than one event from the same organisation.
